U.S. Representative Christopher Lee, a New York Republican, resigned from the House after a report that he responded to an online “women seeking men” posting by describing himself as a divorced lobbyist and a “fit fun classy guy.”
“I have made profound mistakes,” Lee said in a statement today that said he resigned effective immediately. Lee didn’t specify those mistakes in his statement. The Gawker website said his response to a posting on Craigslist also included a shirtless photo of himself.
“I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents,” he said. “I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all.”
Lee, 46, first won election to the House in 2008, succeeding Republican Representative Tom Reynolds in a district stretching from suburban Buffalo to suburban Rochester. He was re-elected in 2010.
The House Ethics Committee announced last month that it would take no action against Lee and six other lawmakers who raised campaign funds around the time the House voted on overhauling financial regulations.
He is the second upstate New York representative to resign within a year. Democrat Eric Massa gave up his seat last March. He had been under investigation by the ethics committee following complaints about his conduct toward his staff.
